Emerging Links/Digital Divide

Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) sought to address the problems of school under-achievement in the district though an innovative project known as Emerging Links. Acknowledging the importance of collaboration and teamwork among schools, families, and the communities where they reside in the task of ensuring positive educational outcomes, the project leverages many of the District’s existing resources to tackle the situation.

The project takes advantage of the existing Dashboard technology developed in order to put student records and coursework online for parents to view, the presence of many decommissioned but renewable computers in the District, and a committed team of District professionals. These resources formed the background for the project’s strategy of computer distribution to thousands of families eligible for free and reduced lunches.
