According to Article 31 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and Article 30 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, every child – regardless of his/her level of ability – is entitled to a safe space in which to play and relax. Two projects developed at Beit Issie Shapiro (BIS) provide exactly that – one focusing on a physical environment and the other on a virtual one.
BIS’ Friendship Park, Israel’s first accessible and inclusive playground, located in the heart of a major municipal park, is a popular gathering spot for families with children of all levels of ability. Limitations are forgotten as children play together on specially-adapted equipment that suits all levels of ability. The playground is also a platform for social change having significant impact across Israel and overseas through accompanying educational programming aiming to build a more inclusive society, in which children with disabilities are provided with the rights and freedoms they deserve.
Sometimes going to the playground is not possible and children with disabilities need ways to fill leisure time just like any other child. BIS offers training and consultation to help provide children with disabilities access to apps that are appropriate for their skill levels. Through the use of technology, we are opening up a whole new world for children with disabilities, empowering them, giving them a voice, improving their motor and cognitive skills and providing them with a sense of capability and greater level of independence than ever before.Back to Map
