In the remote region of Chipata, on the border of Zambia and Malawi, 12-year-old Fanele lives in a makeshift hut with her family.
A lonesome child, she dreams of connecting with the outside world. Using her uncle’s mobile phone, she became a U-Reporter to make a difference in her country, where HIV prevalence rates are worrying.
Fanele’s story gives an insight into the challenges faced by young people in Zambia, and how their innovative thinking and their spirit are helping to change the future of the country.
This short film was produced by UNICEF’s Office of Research – Innocenti in 2014 to support The State of the World’s Children.
